Objective: Use the Internet and spreadsheets to find calories and fat in a typical fast food meal.

Project Rubric:  Information on how this project will be graded.

Procedure: 

Step One:  

Decide which fast food restaurant you would like to visit. Click on that restaurant's web site below.

Once there, plan a meal with a sandwich, salad or other main dish, a side dish (french fries, etc), a drink, and a dessert. For each item on your menu, record the total calories and the calories from fat. Your meal must contain at least five (5) items, and no mofre than seven items!

Step Two: 

Enter your data in an Excel spreadsheet.  Click here to see a sample and directions for completing the spreadsheet. When you have finished your spreadsheet and charts, complete the handout, print it out (use the Canon MF6500, which is just outside the door of the lab), and hand it in to Mr. Biggs.

Step Three: 

Using Microsoft PowerPoint, create ONE slide that summarizes your findings. Use the sample below to guide you.

Title:  Include the name of the restaurant and their logo.

Table:  Copy and paste your table that includes all the nutritional information about your meal. Be sure your column headings clearly state what the numbers stand for. Make sure it is formatted nicely so it is easy to read.

Chart 1: Copy and paste the chart that shows the total calories in your meal for each item and the calories from fat for each item. This is called "Calories and Fat from a Fast Food Meal" on the sample. (click here to see an example)

Chart 2: Create a chart that shows the percentage of fat calories and non-fat calories from one item on your menu. (click here to see an example)

Text Box Use this information from TeensHealth to evaluate your meal for calories from fat.  How does your percentage of fat compare to the percentage recommended?  Use this nutrition calculator to determine how many calories you need each day. Does your meal exceed the calories per day? Do you have enough calories left to eat two more meals in one day? What about other guidelines like eating fruits and vegetables.  Have you planned a healthy meal?  What changes might you make in your meal to make it healthier?

When you finish the slide, save it in the appropriate folder in the Student Drive (file name should include YOUR NAME and the NAME OF YOUR RESAURANT. Example: Todd JackinBox).
